Petroleum Prices Should Return to Pre-War Levels: PMML spokesperson

Lahore: Spokesperson for the Pakistan Markazi Muslim League (PMML), Dr Muzammil Iqbal Hashmi, has welcomed the government’s decision to reduce petroleum prices following the end of tensions between the United States and Iran, but said the reduction is insufficient and does not provide meaningful relief to the public.
In a statement, Dr Hashmi urged the government to restore petroleum prices to their pre-war levels and completely abolish the petroleum levy, which he described as an unnecessary burden on consumers.
He said international oil prices have declined following the ceasefire and easing of tensions in the region, and the government should pass on the full benefit of lower global prices to the people. According to him, the recent reduction announced by the prime minister falls short of public expectations and does not adequately address the financial difficulties faced by ordinary citizens.
Dr Hashmi maintained that the petroleum levy has become an additional burden on the public at a time when inflation and the cost of living remain major concerns. He called on the government to review its fuel pricing policy and ensure that relief measures genuinely benefit the people.
“The decline in global oil prices should be reflected in domestic fuel prices. Petroleum products should now be cheaper than their pre-war levels, and the government should take practical steps to reduce the financial burden on citizens,” he said.
The PMML spokesperson further stated that the party would continue to raise its voice on issues affecting the public and oppose policies that place additional economic pressure on low- and middle-income households.
He urged the government to provide tangible relief to consumers by reducing fuel costs and reconsidering taxation measures linked to petroleum products.
